Compounded medicine
A preparation assembled for a patient’s need, in place of a finished medicine from a manufacturer.
FDA-approved
FDA, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has reviewed a named product for a named use and granted approval.
Telehealth
Care at a distance, using a call or information sent for later review.
503A
A section of U.S. law for a pharmacy or doctor preparing medicine for a named patient. It requires a valid prescription for that person and sets other conditions, including limits on copying ready-made products.
503B
A section of U.S. law for a facility registered with FDA to make batches of sterile medicines, meaning free of living germs. Often called an outsourcing facility, it may supply clinics or hospitals without prescriptions naming each patient. This rule concerns the maker. It does not let a service supply a prescription medicine to you without the required prescription.
NDC
Short for National Drug Code, a code for a product in the government’s drug list. A listing does not mean FDA approved the medicine.
Prior authorization
An advance review of whether a plan or programme will agree to pay.
Adverse event
Something unwanted during medicine use; the report alone cannot tell whether the medicine was its cause.
