Care in the margin

A reader’s journal

Missouri fact file dated October 1, 2026.

Put a name against a Missouri licence

Begin with the person’s full name and their role. Check the pharmacy separately from the person who assesses you.

Match the role to the board

Missouri’s State Board of Registration for the Healing Arts licenses doctors and physician assistants.

Nurse practitioners and other nurses have their licences issued by Missouri’s State Board of Nursing.

For pharmacies and pharmacists, the licensing body is the Missouri Board of Pharmacy.

Open the pharmacy board’s public search links

Ask for the licence type as well as the name. Then compare what you were told with the state record.

Use the state search, then ask about the role

The boards provide links to MOPRO for public searches of Missouri licences.

In Missouri, prescribing by a nurse practitioner or physician assistant requires a written agreement with a doctor. That doctor reviews a share of their patient records.

An advanced practice nurse is a nurse licensed for a role such as nurse practitioner. A physician assistant has a different licence, issued by the Healing Arts board.

The agreement involves a doctor in the care, but does not mean the doctor sees every patient. Patients seeing a nurse practitioner or physician assistant have the right to see the doctor named in the agreement.

  • What kind of licence do you hold?
  • Which doctor is named in your prescribing agreement? How can I ask to see that doctor?
  • Which pharmacy will make the medicine, or hand it over to me?

Treat a clear record as a starting point

A record without public board action tells you only that no such action appears there. It does not rate the person’s care.

Return to the treatment question after checking the name. Ask why this exact product is being proposed for you.
